Four hikers walking on a scenic forest path titled "Verdant Pathways".

Overview

Verdant Pathways is Verdant Futures Appalachia’s learning and capacity development initiative, creating accessible environments that connect people and organizations with the knowledge, skills, resources, and opportunities needed to help align, strengthen, and grow the plant-forward ecosystem across Appalachia.

Through flexible educational and capacity development experiences, Verdant Pathways supports personal, community, organizational, and economic participation while adapting to the needs of individuals, communities, institutions, and partners.

Purpose

Access to knowledge and opportunity is not evenly distributed across Appalachia. Individuals and organizations may face barriers related to information, skills, confidence, resources, networks, or access to supportive pathways.

Verdant Pathways helps address these gaps through practical learning, capacity development, navigation, and connection.

By creating multiple entry points for learning and participation, the initiative helps people and organizations build the knowledge, confidence, relationships, and capacity needed to pursue opportunities and contribute to their communities and the broader plant-forward ecosystem.

What It Does

Verdant Pathways may include:

  • Workshops, learning series, and adaptable curricula
  • Plant-forward literacy and food education
  • Community cooking and food-confidence activities
  • Leadership and capacity development programs
  • School, college, university, employer, and institutional partnerships
  • Workforce participation, readiness, coaching, and navigation
  • Peer learning and connections to community resources and opportunities

Who It Serves

Participants may include Appalachian residents, students, educators, workers, individuals seeking new opportunities, community organizations, institutions, employers, and other partners.

Programs may be designed for specific populations or communities when doing so advances VFA’s charitable and educational purposes and responds to identified regional needs.

How It Connects to VFA’s Other Initiatives

Verdant Pathways provides the learning and capacity development environment linking knowledge with participation and opportunity across VFA’s four Signature Initiatives.

It can deepen awareness and engagement generated through VerBAM!, respond to needs and opportunities identified through Appalachian Confluence, and help individuals and organizations build capacity to participate in enterprise and economic opportunities connected with the Plant-Forward Exchange.

Building knowledge, capacity, and pathways to opportunity across Appalachia.
