Overview
Plant-Forward Exchange is Verdant Futures Appalachia’s enterprise development initiative, supporting entrepreneurs, makers, producers, innovators, and community-based enterprises that can help align, strengthen, and grow the plant-forward ecosystem across Appalachia.
Through education, technical assistance, mentorship, connections, and ecosystem development, the Exchange helps strengthen locally rooted enterprises, expand economic opportunity, and build connections across Appalachia’s emerging plant-forward economy.
Purpose
Appalachia possesses significant entrepreneurial talent, agricultural resources, cultural knowledge, maker traditions, and emerging innovation that can contribute to a more diverse and resilient regional economy.
Yet entrepreneurs and small enterprises may face barriers involving business development, market access, technical knowledge, networks, financing readiness, supply chains, visibility, and connections to specialized resources.
Plant-Forward Exchange helps participants navigate these barriers while strengthening the broader ecosystem needed for locally rooted plant-forward enterprises to develop, connect, and grow.
What It Does
Plant-Forward Exchange may include:
Who It Serves
Participants may include Appalachian entrepreneurs, makers, growers, producers, innovators, small enterprises, and individuals exploring plant-forward enterprise opportunities.
The broader public benefit includes stronger locally rooted enterprises, increased economic participation, expanded markets for Appalachian products and services, strengthened regional supply chains, and greater community economic resilience.
How It Connects to VFA’s Other Initiatives
Plant-Forward Exchange provides the enterprise development pathway connecting entrepreneurship and locally rooted economic opportunity across VFA’s four Signature Initiatives.
Potential entrepreneurs may emerge through VerBAM!, build knowledge and capacity through Verdant Pathways, and develop relationships and market connections through Appalachian Confluence. Participating enterprises can, in turn, contribute products, expertise, employment, mentorship, and investment back into the broader VFA ecosystem.
