Our Vision
We envision a thriving Appalachian future rooted in heritage, powered by plants, and built by the people.
Our Mission
Verdant Futures Appalachia aligns, strengthens, and grows the plant-forward ecosystem across the Appalachian region.
We do this through network activation, cultural engagement, professional and leadership development, and enterprise growth.
Our Core Values
Our values guide how we work and what we prioritize:
Our Mandate
VFA operates as a nonprofit social enterprise and cultural strategy engine advancing a regional Appalachian renaissance.
As a regional backbone organization, we support activation, alignment, capacity building, and enterprise development across Appalachia’s plant-forward ecosystem. We amplify and support work already happening across the region, helping connect people, organizations, networks, and resources.
Plant-forward encompasses food, beverages, wellness, natural materials, regenerative systems, and bio-based innovation.
Our Approach
VFA operates through a backbone model with distributed leadership, balancing regional coordination with local action. A small backbone structure provides coordination and shared direction, while partners, communities, and initiatives contribute leadership, ideas, and action grounded in place.
Three Core Strategies guide how we work:
Our Integrated Impact Model
Our Integrated Impact Model connects our vision and mission to four Pillars of Impact, three Core Strategies, three Development Lanes, and four Signature Initiatives. These elements work together as a coordinated system to build capacity, expand opportunity, and advance long-term regional impact.
Four Pillars of Impact
Three Development Lanes
Four Signature Initiatives
Appalachian Confluence, VerBAM!, Verdant Pathways, and Plant-Forward Exchange translate the framework into coordinated action and provide pathways for participation, partnership, and investment.
Where We’re Headed
VFA’s planned growth begins with ecosystem activation, partner engagement, collaborative learning, and early proof-of-concept activity in ARC-defined North Central and Central Appalachian sub-regions.
Over time, the framework calls for broader regional alignment, expanded participation, stronger workforce pathways, enterprise development, and increased partnerships and investment.
Our long-term goal is a regional renaissance where culture, economy, health, and the land rise together, creating vibrant communities that attract, retain, and reconnect people across Appalachia.

As our work develops, we will track the partnerships formed, people engaged, collaborative efforts launched, and resources brought into Appalachian communities. We will use what we learn with partners to refine our initiatives and strengthen their contribution to cultural vitality, economic opportunity, community wellbeing, and land stewardship.
